We welcome singers from all areas, as long as transportation to and from rehearsal in a timely manner can be arranged. All of our rehearsals and the majority of our performances take place in Modesto, CA.

CVYC introduces its singers to a wide variety of quality choral music, from folk music of various cultures to classical pieces and jazz. Being able to draw connections among a wide variety of musical genres makes our singers better performers. We want them to be excellent singers and accomplished musicians who have an open approach to music from all over the world. As such, you will hear CVYC sing in music in a variety of languages from many different cultures.
-
Singers in the chorus receive training in healthy vocal production in a group setting. Warm-up exercises develop good breathing habits and vocal placement. Moreover, participating in chorus builds ensemble skills, including ear training, part holding, and balancing one's voice with others. Choral singing also fosters teamwork and cooperation.
-
Singers may be asked to look at certain passages of music or listen to provided recordings at home in order to expedite our rehearsal process. As singers progress and take on more challenging music, some practice outside of rehearsal may be helpful.
-
Most of the instruction takes place during the weekly rehearsals. Near concert time, there may be additional rehearsals scheduled as needed, and based on singer availability.
-
CVYC gives two formal performances per year, one at the end of each semester. These concerts are given at various locations in the Modesto area.
-
Parents and guardians are welcome to sit in the hallway outside the rehearsal room! Unfortunately the room is too small to accommodate parents or guardians to observe rehearsals.
-
We select our repertoire from a wide range of cultures, religions, and time periods. Historically, some of the finest choral music was written for religious purposes. We rehearse and often perform in churches as they are well suited to our practical and acoustical needs, but we are not affiliated with any religious group or organization.
